“Zombie” Jay Brannan (The Cranberries)

From an artist that I will definitely be learning more bout, here’s a minimalist Cranberries cover. Learn more about Jay at www.jaybrannan.com or find him on Facebook.

He’s put out an album of covers and also has a great body of original work, which you can find on iTunes.

“Go Your Own Way” The Cranberries (Fleetwood Mac)

For my wife, who is not feeling well today. I hope you dig it, Lil Bit.

“A Forest” Toadies (The Cure)

After Kids Incorporated on Friday and the kid with a ukelele on Monday, it had to come to this….

The Cure’s “A Forest” covered by Texas rockers Toadies. The original and the cover both arrive at such an ominous sound, albeit via different instrumentation. I dig it. As I look out my office window, I can see the edge of gray trees. If I ever do get lost out there, I will invariably hear this song and try to think of rainbows and puppies instead.

“Don’t Bring Me Down” New Pornographers (E.L.O.)

Who doesn’t love singing “Ooh-woo-hoo!” in falsetto? This is the best audio I could find of a live performance.

“Long Way to the Top” Billy Corgan (AC/DC)

Here’s Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame being awesome by performing on the street for some Italian fans. Even better, he’s doing an AC/DC song. Music begins in earnest around 1 m 25 s mark.

“Wild Horses” The Sundays (Rolling Stones)

From what I understand, Susan Boyle who was runner-up in the British karoake finals is or has released a similar version of this Rolling Stones song as a single. But for my money, give me The Sundays. Perfect for a rainy overcast day while I pour my broken heart into my journal at Starbucks.

“Blue” The Thorns (The Jayhawks)

Indie/alternative rock supergroup (really?) The Thorns consisted of Matthew Sweet, Peter Droge and Shawn Mullins. They recorded one album to my knowledge around 2003. Here they are with a Jayhawks number. For my wife who says the Jayhawks version is better, even though we are both fans of Matthew Sweet & Co.

“Billie Jean” Chris Cornell (Michael Jackson)

Is it safe to say that Chris Cornell may have the most vocal power and control in rock since Freddie Mercury? Truly a gifted singer with a great song from Michael Jackson‘s golden age.

“Night Swimming” by Sugarland (R.E.M.)

Sugarland is another country-pop band that makes me like them in spite of my cynicism towards Nashville’s current establishment. Kristian Bush, the male half of the duo, was a member of Billy Pilgrim which was a great acoustic rock male vocal duo in the 1990’s. So thank God that even if Billy Pilgrim didn’t make it, Kristian and his current cohorts still find a way to be awesome on occasion. Here’s a cover of the hauntingly beautiful R.E.M. song “Night Swimming.”

REM’s “Everybody Hurts” covered by The Corrs
